Haruki murakami dark night5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Even the plot, while not intrinsically cinematic, resembles those movies which follow the stories of several characters in one city whose paths criss-cross through chance and coincidence (think Short Cuts, Magnolia, Crash). There are references to Alphaville and Love Story. He is so scrupulous about telling us what music is playing in the background of each scene that you could compile a soundtrack. Murakami relies for the most part on dialogue and description of sights and sounds to convey information only occasionally does the observing consciousness dip into the minds of the characters. (Although never named, readers familiar with Tokyo will identify the location as Shibuya.) ![]() The filmic quality of After Dark is evident from the first page, when we are presented with a panoramic establishing shot of Tokyo, and the camera eye then zooms in on a point in the great metropolis, where most of the action will unfold. The story is told in the present tense by an unnamed, unknown “we” who, like the angels in Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire, can observe humans and their problems, but are unable to intervene: they are, in their own words, “pure point of view.” Haruki Murakami has deliberately, explicitly written his 11th novel by using techniques borrowed from the cinema. If it weren’t for the printed, bound object in your hands, it would be tempting to call After Dark a movie, not a book. ![]() George eliot's adam5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Her books have also been adapted into various films and television programs. Because Ligotti is nothing more or less than the king of weird fiction - his short stories are genius, and the relative lack of attention for that work constitutes a crime. Which is all to good, because the “Who the hell is Thomas Ligotti?” question is the only part of this fuss that we should truly care about. HBO had to issue a statement refuting the claim, and social media raged (and may still be raging) with discussions of “Hey, just what is plagiarism?” Suddenly, too, Subterranean Press’s new Ligotti books - the rather dry metaphysical story collection The Spectral Link and a riveting collection of interviews with the author, Born to Fear - began to receive renewed scrutiny. ![]() The media attention spiked sales of the book at the center of the controversy - Ligotti’s nonfiction philosophy tome The Conspiracy Against the Human Race - to the point that it began to outsell Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.
